She had 3 shots and did really well with them--they didn't seem to slow her down a bit!

Happy Birthday to You!

Wow, where has this year gone! I can't believe that our baby girl is now 1. She had such a fun Birthday and here is the run down of her special day:

Grandma and Grandpa Handl came in last night to celebrate her day.

Good morning to the Birthday girl:

We took a morning trip to the zoo

Outside the zoo entrance:

Watching the pigeons and ducks

Looking at the baby elephant:

A piggyback from Grandpa was much more fun than the stroller:

Waving bye-bye to the animals:

"Say cheese"

Big girls get to walk at the zoo:

Petting the goats:

It was such a hot day that we all got a bit overheated and *needed* to cool down with some ice cream!

Let's celebrate! Happy Birthday to the Birthday Girl!

She was thoroughly spoiled by all of her grandparents, aunts, uncles and mommy & daddy!

You can see her just vibrating with excitement in this video!

And of course, no first Birthday would be complete without the face smearing cake shots, so here they are.

I made our little monkey little monkey cupcakes for the big day--apple banana cupcakes with chocolate frosting. I don't know what I was thinking, but I didn't put them in the refrigerator and they 'wilted' in the hot Houston weather.

Despite the fact that the little monkeys sweated their eyeballs and noses off, Madeline seemed to love them!

She had quite a few laughs through the whole process:

Recapping our last month of babyhood - 12 Months Old!

Happy Birthday Madeline!

Here she is on her first Birthday:

She's had such a fun month....here are the highlights:

Another visit from Grandma!

Another trip to the beach for this girl who loves the water!

She got to discover the underwater creatures at the Texas State Aquarium.

She is standing a lot on her own and this past week she has really taken off with her walking.

She has really enjoyed playing with balls this month.

A trip with daddy to look at cars and planes

Other fun things she can do now:
-She is shaking her head for yes and no
-She has been signing back to us with some of her baby sign language
-She is mimicking noises a lot so I think her first words are just around the corner
-She can now drink from a straw
-She weighed in at 18lb 10oz last night

Look what we grew...

Remember this picture?

Well those blooms turned into a tree full of peaches.

And finally....

They were quite tasty and juicy, but unfortunately the birds and squirrels got to enjoy more of them than we did.

We also got some great blackberries:

It always seems that food you grow yourself tastes so much better! Hopefully in the future we can expand our gardening as it seems that anything grows well here in Houston!

Adventures from our Anniversary Weekend

We celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary this past weekend. I cannot believe how fast our first five years has flown by! We decided to take a road trip for the weekend and headed down to Corpus Christi as it was a new place to explore and within semi-easy driving distance with a little one in tow!

We arrived late Friday afternoon and had time to enjoy a tasty seafood dinner and a walk along the bay. We forgot our camera that evening, so no pictures to share :(

Saturday, Madeline gave us a treat and let us sleep until a bit after 8 a.m! We started the day with a trip to Padre Island National Seashore.

"Hurry up, I want to get to the water!"

Hurricane Alex hit this area last weekend, bringing with it tons and tons of seaweed. She wasn't too sure of the seaweed at first but it didn't stop our little beach bum from enjoying the water.

"Hi mommy!"

We enjoyed strolling along the beach

and discovering interesting little sea creatures.

All of the seaweed made a cool hiding spot for thousands of little clams that littered the beach.

We enjoyed watching the waves come in to uncover the clams and then the scurry that followed as they burrowed back into the sand.

She was a bit too intrigued by all the things to see to do much walking.

Even with all the seaweed, the setting was very picturesque

If the sand wasn't so hot, I'm sure she would have loved to crawl in the sandy white dunes.

This little girl sure does love the beach!

After cooling off and cleaning up, we headed to the Texas State Aquarium for Madeline's first encounter with the underwater world.

She was a bit apprehensive at first and sure didn't like the huge stingrays that kept swimming by

but she was very interested in all of the fish.

By the time we reached the tank with the pretty little clown fish and angel fish she was having a great time. These pretty fish were her favorites

I wish this picture would have turned out better because it completely captures her joy!

"Look at this silly jellyfish!"

Watching the sea turtles was very entertaining, as well.

"Wait! Where did he go?"

We capped off the day at a little seafood place on the pier. Madeline didn't have any seafood, but she sure did enjoy her dinner. Haven't you heard that banana is the new beauty treatment and is great for your skin and hair?

Sleeping in for two mornings in a row would have been too good to be true, so in true Madeline style we woke up with smiles on our faces and lots of conversation.

She was so funny at breakfast and preferred the bran flakes to the french toast. Silly baby!

After breakfast we hit the road and headed to a little town on the bay that we heard was a fun stop with lots of art galleries. We didn't plan on a sleeping baby and forgot that on Sunday morning everything would be closed, so we drove through the downtown and will have to stop on another trip.

"Mom, I call shotgun!"

She did really well on the trip home and we only needed to stop twice. We were able to visit one of our favorite gas station 'chains' on the way back to Houston. If you ever have the great (mis)fortune of driving across TX, you'll have to make a stop at Buc-ee's. They have very clean restrooms, lots of tasty road snacks and Madeline even did a bit of car shopping! Too bad the price tag was well over $200.

All in all, it was a great weekend and I think Madeline thoroughly enjoyed herself, as she went to bed at 6:15 tonight!
